What you can do at home with your child!
Many parents have asked me what they can do at home with their children to keep them reading and interested in reading. Here are a few suggestions.
1. Allow the child to choose their book. Encourage them read about something that they enjoy. Non-fiction books are acceptable for images. Literature novels should have less pictures are possible, unless they are graphic novels. i.e. Diary of A Wimpy Kid.
2. Stay interested in what you child is reading. Ask them questions about the books. Here are some great questions to start off with:
1. What is you book about?
2. What do you like about it so far?
3. Is is a series? Do you want the next book in the series to read?
4. Do you want to read the book together? To your brother or sister?
3. Make sure students have a quiet "time" and "place" to ensure that they can read without interruption. Also, make sure they DO NOT watch the clock while reading.
4. Go to the bookstore or library often. The more books they get to choose and read for fun, the more interested they become in reading a lot more books!
